Morning, Day 5, Fernandina, Espinoza Point

August 1, 2013

Punta Espionoza, Fernandina Island

This week is going much too fast.

Fernandina is the youngest and western most island in
the Galapagos. It is also one of the most volcanically active
in the region. The latet eruption was is April 2009. In 1968
Within a two week period the floor of the caldera sank 990 feet
and the the early 1970's the coastline at Punta Espinoza was
uplifeted some 9 feet during an earthquake.

This morning we did a short walk around the beach areas and
saw a lot of large marine iguanas. We saw a very young baby sea
lion and mother and cormorants nesting.
